OASIS-C tip of the week: 60 day episode

It’s back for 2011 and better than ever: the OASIS-C Tip of the Week! The tips will return to Wednesdays after this week.

Q: May the first OASIS completed during the 60 day episode be used to establish an HHRG for payment for that entire episode when a home health agency (HHA) is unable to complete the OASIS within the first five days of a start of care episode?

A: CMS Response:  The five day assessment completion and reassessment window is a condition of participation requirement.  Failure to meet these requirements carry their own sanctions unrelated to the request for anticipated payment (RAP) and claim submission.  From a payment perspective, in an isolated instance in which an agency is unable to complete the OASIS within the first five days of a start of an episode, the agency may immediately complete the appropriate OASIS schedule at the point in time at which the agency becomes aware that it had missed the required date.  That OASIS assessment may be used to establish an HHRG for payment for the submission of a RAP.

  1. Is the episode of care counted from the day the oasis is entered? If the oasis is done and entered in the computer within the five day reassessment window, does this push out the 60 day episode to different dates or do the dates remain the same?
